X-Men Giant Sized #1 - In store today

I love to hate the X-Men. It's true. Like so many of us, I grew up reading Chris Claremont's definitive run on the book in the 1980s. The Dark Phoenix Saga was bigger than Star Wars to me.

Later on the X-Men exploded commercially and alot of good followed that. Then came alot of bad. Onslaught was strained, Wolverine was overused, and by the mid 90s the X-Men were unrecognizable.

Nowadays my favorite X book is Uncanny X-Force, written by Rick Remender, before that it was the Kyle / Yost scribed X-Force. This book of course has nothing to do with the abominable X-force of yesteryear. It's in many ways an anti- X-Men book. Conventions are trashed, nothing is sacred. It's exciting the way X-Men comics were when I was a kid.

So anyways...today a book called X-Men Giant Sized #1 is in store. I was interested in it's premise of linking a current story to the original Stan Lee X-Men and in doing so, revealing new secrets of the X-Men that have been buried all these years. Sound like a gimmick? Sure does. What got me was the writer- former X-Force scribe Christopher Yost. I knew it would be a smart book.

Smart it is. The Neo show up to confront the X-Men. Well, kill them really. I always hated the Neo, cause they were just so....neo. Cyclops tried to keep the peace while these overpowered maniacs decide that all mutants must die. This unveils the secret of Cyclops and the original X-Men. Without spoilers, let's just say that the "secret" of the X-Men shows up to defend them, and the Neo are utterly destroyed. Cyclops begins remembering the past secret, courtesy of a memory implant left by Jean Grey, Phoenix, long ago. What shows up to protect the X-Men and all mutants not only wipes the Neo out of existence, but decides now that all homo sapiens must go as well. Thus the start of the current X-Men storyline "From First To Last".

This story will continue into the X-Men monthly series with issue #12. Definately worth checking out if you are reading current X-books or are thinking of getting back into them. And, 100% guaranteed vampire-free!

Marvel's Mystery Men - a 1930s Precursor to the Marvel Age

Interesting article from writer David Liss' hometown. Liss currently writes Black Panther: Man Without Fear. Marvel has been in stealth mode on this book so far, but here is a good rundown of what to expect from Mystery Men, which will be in-store at Alliance in June.

Jim Lee Justice League?

Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool thinks so -
http://www.bleedingcool.com/forums/showthread.php?7371-Jim-Lee-Hints-At-Justice-League-Future

By September Brightest Day and Flashpoint will be past, and the big seven- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Hal Jordan Green Lantern and Barry Allen Flash - would likely be available for a return to the classic JLA line-up.

Such a book would almost have to be penned by Geoff Johns. Meaning JLA #1! All others, 2 or less!

This is going to be a huge year for DC comics one way or another.

Flashpoint #5 in August- Something BIG?

The last issue, of Flashpoint, arriving in-store on August 31 is gonna be a big game changer for DC. So big that it is the only book they are gonna ship that week! Must be some heavy, heavy stuff in store. Here's more info on DC Comics' blog:

DC is generally very classy and conservative as far as comic publishers go. This definately has our Spider-sense tingling!

Image has been rolling out nonstop hits lately, with Morning Glories, Butcher Baker, Blue Estate, Green Wake, and Undying Love just to name a few.

We thought Nonplayer looked really cool and ordered a bunch, and it STILL sold out. We just got new printings of the first issue back in stock today. Here's some preview/ review info courtesy of Comics Alliance- http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/03/11/nonplayer-nate-simpson-preview/

MoKa Thor Review

The loveable MoKa crew discuss among other things, the Thor movie, in their newest podcast installment. Alliance Comics has nothing to do with these guys. Nothing whatsoever!

Definately worth a listen:

http://networkedblogs.com/hJXy3

Is Thor Worthy?

If you still have not made it to see Thor yet, here's a good reviews from CBR. Alliance Comics gives the movie 2 Thumbs Up. Unless you have some sort of weird hate in your heart, you will enjoy this flick. And if you're an old school fan of Marvel Comics and the Odinson, you just might be shouting "Zounds"!

Flashpoint #1 (Spoilers, Beware!)

The Flash #12 and Flashpoint #1 were the first books I tore into today. You really do not need to read the Road to Flashpoint story arc of Flash issues 9 thru 12 to get into Flashpoint, but it does help and it's great storytelling by Geoff Johns. What you need to know is that our Barry Allen is the only person in the DCU who knows things are not right as Flashpoint begins, and that the Speed Force, being rooted in time itself, is the cause of everything being drastically altered.

Serious Flashpoint #1 Spoilers Ahead...

Barry immediately has to deal with Iris bearing the last name West, his mom being alive, and no one other than himself seeing that things are changed. He quickly seeks out the Batman to get some answers.

Meanwhile, we are privy to Cyborg attempting to assemble The Secret Seven, Captain Thunder, Citizen Cold, Batman, and many others to deal with the King and Queen. It seems that in this new world, Aquaman has sunk all of Europe into the seas and the Amazons have conquered Great Britain. Aquaman and Wonder Woman are established as the global supervillains of Flashpoint, being responsible for the murder of over a hundred million people.

When Barry makes his way into an abandoned and defunct Batcave, he meets the Batman (who is no joiner by the way- Cyborg's rally ends poory). While taking a beating from the Knight of Vengeance, Barry realizes that Batman isn't Bruce Wayne at all, but rather his father, Thomas. It is suggested that instead of Bruce's parents being gunned down, it was Bruce who was slain, creating a vengeful crusader out of the father.

This issue is an exciting start, bringing all the exuberence of Elseworlds to meet the tension of a real DC Universe epic told by writer Geoff Johns. The Andy Kubert artwork is astounding. This is definately the best looking superhero book on the stands right now.

Flashpoint #1 is in store today, Wednesday May 11. Alliance has all 3 covers availalbe, including the 1:25 sketch variant!

FF #3 In-store today

Jonathan Hickman has weaved the FF, Future Foundation, former Fantastic Four into something nearly as complex as his his SHIELD with this third issue of the new series.

In scenes that are both comical and alarming, invitations are sent to the mad geniuses of Marvel - Mad Thinker, Wizard, Diablo and others. Invitations to an audience with Doctor Doom, at the Baxter Building, with the express purpose of brainstorming ways to destroy Reed Richards. What makes this interesting is that Reed and the rest of the FF are right there with them.

As the mysterious actions of Reed's daughter Val are explained, we learn that she was involved with the stranding of The Reeds in our universe... The Reeds being a collection of multiple Reed Richards' from various alternate dimensions in the Multiverse.

Imagine an interplanar Illuminati with no emotion and no regard for the needs of our little Universe. That pretty much sums up the Reeds, who are attempting to destroy whatever it takes in our lone Universe so they can return to saving the "many". Our only hope is that between Doom, our own Reed Richards and papa Nathan, and the gathered Intelligentsia, a plan can be devised to stop these Reeds from doing some very bad things to our world.

FF #3 is in-store today, Wednesday May 11. Issues 1 and 2 are still availalbe on the racks!

Undying Love is pure badass-ery

Awesome new Image comics title, issue 2 ships this week as well as a new printing of the debut #1. Tired of twinkling vampires? Me too. Undying love is taking vampires back! CBR gives the book a fair treatment here:

It takes alot for the Washington DC area's best comic book shop to back a vampire book these days, but we stand by this one!

Flashpoint Begins...

This Wednesday 5/11/11 new comics include The Flash #12 and Flashpoint #1. Socio-economic factors made me a Marvel guy, if you believe in "Marvel people" and "DC people". Still I can't help but be excited about this.

May is gonna be a teaser...the real party starts in June, when we'll see books like Batman Knight of Vengeance, by the 100 bullets team of Azzarello and Risso. Flashpoint respins Wayne Enterprises into Wayne Casinos, and I'm not sure if this dark and dicey Bruce Wayne is a good guy or not.

We'll also see Aquaman as a badass in Emperor Aquaman. DC copy reads "Flash Fact: He will drown the world- then rule it!" Bring it on, I want to meet this Aquaman (well, in a comic book, not like, in a dark alley or swimming pool).

The Green Lantern aspect of Flashpoint is most intriguing. Abin Sur is Green Lantern, because he never died. Hal Jordan is not, because he never received the ring. Each will have their own Flashpoint miniseries.

DC Comics also happens to be doing a cool little promotion for this event, and Alliance Comics is all about it! 16 of the Flashpoint #1 issues are accompanied by a free insignia pin when you pick up the comics. These buttons will be released with the comics and we will be giving away the pin / button when you buy the book. Pretty cool, huh?

Flashpoint #1 is in store this week on Wednesday, 5/11/11.

Free Comic Book Day '11...gone in a Flashpoint!

Apologies for a week of radio silence here! FCBD is a huge undertaking both before, during and after. This was our biggest and best yet! Thanks go out to everyone who came in on May 7 and to all those who helped us make this year's event happen! By all accounts it was our best attended ever in the 10 years we've been doing it. It's good to be Washington DC's best comic book store! Thank you, everyone.

Trivia? Well, it's supposed to be trivial...Ok, so I was told to make the trivia hard as nails, and maybe it was a little tooooo harsh. We did have winners, though, so somebody knew something! Thanks all who enteered, it was a BLAST and next year I'll know to be a little more sane with the questions! Study hard, true believers, we gave away $250 worth of graphic novels and hardcovers as prizes, and there is always next year!

Somebody won a hundred dollars of comic book awesomeness! And that someone is Michael Morganstein. Ya heard it here first...Michael doesn't know yet but he's about to get a seriously good email!

Back to abnormal...that's right, comic news and reviews are about to ensue here on a regular basis! See you at the comic shop...
